We all have moments when life feels heavy, when no matter what we try, nothing seems to make it better. For young people--especially those facing challeges like housing instability, stress from school or work, or uncertainity about the future--these feelings can hit hard, sometimes even harder than a punch to the gut. If you've ever felt stuck in this way, know this: you are not alone.

Taking care of your mental health doesn't mean "fixing" everything overnight. It doesn't mean that world will suddenly be sunshine and rainbows. It means giving yourself permission to slow down, breathe, and find small steps forward, even when it feels impossible. Here are a few ways to care for yourself when nothing seems to be working.

  1. Start Small

When your world feels overwhelming, it's okay to shrink your focus. Try one small step: drink a glass of water, strech your body, or write down one thought you're having. Small actions remind your mind and body that you still have control over something.

  1. Breathe and Ground Yourself

It sounds simple, but your breath is a powerful tool. It can quicken and slow your heart rate. Why not use it to slow your heart rate when your mind is going a million miles per hour. Try this: breathe in for four (4) seconds, hold it for another four (4) seconds, and lastly, breathe out for another four (4) seconds. Repeat this as many times as you would like. Notice how it feels to take just a minute for yourself.

  1. Reach Out, Even is It's Hard

Sometimes the hardest thing is asking for help--but it's also one of the bravest. A trusted friend, mentor, therapist, or counselor can remind you that your don't have to carry everything alone. Nine times out of ten someone could be going/gone through a similar situation as you. They could help or they could even be just a shoulder to cry on.

  1. Rest Without Guilt

It's okay to pause. It's okay to not be okay. Resting is not weakness--it's healing. Give yourself permission to nap, listen to music, sit in silence, or simply doing something that you enjoy. Your worth is not defined by productivity.

  1. Remember: This Feeling Won't Last Forever

When nothing feels like it's working, it can feel endless. But the truth is feelings are not permanet no matter how it might feel in the moment. You've survived hard moments before--and you have the strength to do it again.
