About Us
The Youth Action Collective (YAC) is a youth-led group focused on uplifting the voices of young people who are experiencing, have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing homelessness. We work together to create real change in our communities through advocacy, peer leadership, and collaborative projects. YAC is a space where youth take the lead—shaping programs, influencing policy, and building a stronger future for all.
Our logo, a green tree, symbolizes everything we stand for: growth, roots, and community. The roots represent our lived experiences and the foundation we build from. The branches reflect our ability to grow in different directions and reach new possibilities. And the green reminds us of healing, renewal, and the strength that comes from working together.
As part of Child and Family Charities, we’re proud to be housed in a space where over 30 programs come together to support youth and families across the region. YAC is more than a group—it’s a movement led by youth, for youth.
YAC meetings are held every other Monday and are open to youth ages 13–24 who are ready to connect, lead, and make a difference. Each meeting is a space for honest conversation, creative planning, and community-building. Dinner is provided, and youth who RSVP and attend receive a $50 gift card in appreciation of their time and contributions.
If you’re looking for a space where your voice matters and your ideas can lead to action, YAC is the place to be.
Our Home Base
The Youth Action Collective (YAC) is proud to be housed at Child and Family Charities’ main campus on W. Greenlawn Avenue in Lansing, Michigan. This newly renovated, spacious, and youth-friendly facility brings together over 30 programs under one roof—including services that support mental health, housing, education, and leadership development for youth and families.
For over 100 years, Child and Family Charities has been strengthening children, families, and individuals across our community. From its founding in 1911 to today, the organization has stayed true to its mission: “To strengthen and support children, families, and individuals as they evolve and grow in a changing community"
This space represents decades of growth, collaboration, and commitment. Over the years, Child and Family Charities has merged with impactful programs like:
-
Teen Court, now the Teen Accountability Program (TAP), helping first-time youth offenders find a better path.
-
Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), now a Family Growth and Resource Center.
-
Gateway Youth Housing Services, which provides outreach, shelter, and housing for homeless and at-risk youth.
-
Operation Good Cheer, a statewide gift-giving program for children in foster care.
-
Child Welfare & Behavioral Health Services
The Greenlawn building became our new home in 2025 thanks to the generous support of donors, local organizations, and community champions. Now, it serves as a central hub where youth can gather, grow, and take action.
Whether you're coming for a YAC meeting, a workshop, or just to connect—you belong here.
Meet Our YAC Leaders

Angel Purifoy
YAC Leader
Hi, I’m Angel Purifoy, a Youth Action Collective (YAC) Leader passionate about supporting youth who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. I’m currently studying psychology at Arizona State University with the goal of becoming an osteopathic doctor and licensed therapist. My focus is on youth mental health and trauma, and I’m committed to creating spaces where young people feel safe, seen, and empowered. Being a part of YAC gives me the chance to turn my passion into action and help create real change in our communities.

Xavyah Haynes
YAC Leader
Hi, I’m Xavyah Haynes, but everyone calls me Xay. I’ve been a Youth Action Collective (YAC) Leader since February 2025, and I’m deeply passionate about supporting youth who are facing mental health challenges or simply trying to figure out how to navigate adulthood. I know firsthand how tough it can be to go through life without guidance or support, and that’s why I care so much about helping young people find housing, resources, jobs—whatever they need to succeed. I’m currently working toward my associate degree in psychology at Lansing Community College, with the long-term goal of starting my own nonprofit focused on youth mental health. To me, YAC is about being each other’s support system and creating a space where no one has to go through life alone.
